The Green Message for the Month of July:

Green this and that is turning up all over. The cover of the current issue of Indianapolis Monthly says “It’s Easy To GO GREEN”. Inside there are guides to green builders, places to recycle, where to buy hybrid cars and more. The magazine section of the Sunday Indianapolis Star focused on ways to go green.

Here at BUMC we are currently trying “green cleaning” products. So let me know the next time you visit one of the many restrooms around the church. Randy can be reached at email.

Here is a list of some of the chemicals we are trying and some information about them.

Rochester Midland Enviro Care – Neutral Disinfectant

Broadway’s “Green Team” celebrates Earth Day Sunday:
by suggesting 9 personal steps you can take to step up environmental action.

The car you drive: the most important personal climate decision. When you buy your next car, look for the one with the one with the best fuel economy in its class. Each gallon of gas you use releases 25 pounds of heat-trapping carbon dioxide (CO2) into the atmosphere. Better gas mileage reduces global warming and saves you thousands of dollars at the pump over the life of the car.

Choose clean power. More than half the electricity in the U.S. comes from polluting coal-fired power plants—the single largest source of heat trapping gas. If your electricity comes from IP&L, sign up for Green Power to support green power producers. 317-261-8222 or - IPL's website.

Look for the Energy Star. When it comes time to replace appliances, look for the Energy Star label on new models (refrigerators, freezers, furnaces, air conditioners, and water heaters use the most energy). These items cost a bit more initially, but the investment pays for itself within a couple of years. If each household in the United States replaced its existing appliances with the most efficient models available, we could save $15billion in energy costs and eliminate 175 million tons of heat-trapping gases.

Reduce energy use at home. Simple measures such as replacing your old thermostat with a programmable unit or sealing and insulating ductwork and other simple measures, can each reduce a typical family’s carbon dioxide emissions by 5-10 percent.

Think before you drive. If you own more than one vehicle, use the less fuel-efficient one only when you can fill it with passengers. Driving one minivan may be kinder to the environment than two midsize cars. When possible, join a carpool or take mass transit.

Light bulbs matter. If every household in the United States replaced one regular light bulb with an energy-saving model, we could reduce global warming pollution by more than 90 billion pounds over the life of the bulbs; the same as taking 6.3 million cars of the road. By using the more efficient compact fluorescent's, you will do your share to cut back on heat-trapping pollution and save money on your electric bills and on light bulbs.

Plant a tree. Make a difference in your own backyard or get a group together and contact an arborist or urban forester about planting trees on private property and public land. Besides storing carbon, trees provide much-needed shade in the summer, reducing energy bills and fossil fuel use.

Let policymakers know you are concerned about global warming. Call, write or visit with your elected officials and business leaders—they need to hear from concerned citizens. Share your concerns with others. Support groups that help policymakers get timely, accurate information to make informed decisions about global warming solutions.

Tentative Mission Statement and Ministry “Name”

The mission of Broadway’s (Green Team) is to provide awareness, education, inspiration, and suggestions for action for and by the congregation and community that will reduce our collective carbon (fossil fuel) emissions and increase our environmental stewardship.

Naming Contest. The Broadway Green Team is the name that was given to this ministry at the meeting Sunday, April 15, 2007. If you can think of a different, perhaps more jazzy name please email it to either John Gibson or Barb Griffith or put it in the collection plate or leave in the office. Give us your name, phone number or e-mail address. Some time in May a winner will be announced, if the name is changing, and the winner will receive a GREEN product for their creativity.
