BROADWAY IN CHICAGO

In late April, the Shining Light Team traveled to Chicago to attend the TFM Show, a conference and trade show for facility managers and their teams.

The show featured a behind-the-scenes tour of the Shedd Aquarium, which is a unique facility to manage. It was interesting to see what goes into the day-to-day operations of such a place!

And the free conference really paid big dividends for Broadway: “Not only did the show expose the team to their colleagues and peers from around the country and give us all the opportunity to see new technologies, but it also provided practical solutions we can use here at Broadway to improve our facility.”

Key topics at the show included Energy & the Environment, Safety & Security, and Technology. Next time you see Tom, Randy, or Jonathan, ask them about their trip!

WELCOMING KAREN (AND MAX)

Last week, Karen McAleavey began working at Broadway as our second Administrative Assistant. Karen’s position is funded through the Miracle on 29th Street campaign, and we’re excited to have her on the team!

Building on her previous experiences in marketing and administration, Karen will take the lead in producing the bulletin and working on the Tower Chimes newsletter, as well as an abundance of other administrative tasks.

Karen brings with her a built-in co-worker, her newborn son, Max! When not strapped to Karen by way of a BabyBjorn, Max can often be found quietly cooing – or snoozing -- the day away in his crib in Karen’s office. We’re glad that Max and Karen have joined the team, and we’re looking forward to keeping them both busy!

TELL US YOUR MIRACLE!

One of the most important things to remember about Broadway’s Miracle on 29th Street is that the campaign and the new ministries it will add all came from conversations in and around Broadway. After several “Meet the Pastor” gatherings when Rev. Mike first arrived, the Miracle on 29th Street evolved into what it is today, a reflection of the hopes and dreams and visions of the people of Broadway Parish.

On the boards in the Sanctuary and outside the Chapel, we’ve posted many of the things we’ve been hearing from folks as we’ve spoken with them about the campaign. And we’d love to add more! What are some of the things that we’ll be able to do with a full-time Community and Neighborhood Minister? What are your dreams for the Director of Development position? What can become of our Children and Youth program? What do you hope will happen with our physical facility?

Use the comments here or e-mail me at and share your dreams with us!

WHAT’S SHORTHAND FOR “MIRACLE”?

When we say “Broadway’s Miracle on 29th Street,” we’re using that as a quick way to describe a campaign to increase our capacity for ministry in the areas of children/youth, music/arts, member development and discipleship, resource development, facilities, and neighborhood/community.

Sometimes, though, even saying “Broadway’s Miracle on 29th Street” is a mouthful!

As we talk about the campaign and what it will help us do, we often shorten it to “The Miracle” – and sometimes it gets even quicker when we say or write “M29”! So if you’re ever around the church and you hear “M29,” we’re talking about Broadway’s Miracle on 29th Street.

And while we’re talking about our campaign jargon, here’s a quick decoder ring for the rest of the different words and phrases you might hear associated with M29:

Community and Neighborhood Minister / Pastor for Liberation / Pastor of Mission
This is the person who will join our clergy team to facilitate mission work in our neighborhood and in the world, with the aims of increasing our members’ awareness and involvement in mission, expanding the ethnic and economic diversity of Broadway’s membership, and fostering societal change throughout Indianapolis, in our neighborhood, and in our congregation.

Pastor for Hospitality and Discipleship / Member Development
With the hiring of the Children and Youth Pastor and the Pastor for Liberation, Rev. Rachel’s position will be re-focused to provide more opportunities for each member’s gifts, skills, and talents to be nurtured and encouraged with a goal of supporting our community’s continued to growth and development.

Facility Manager / Building Superintendent
These two interchangeable titles reflect the work of Tom Weesner.

“Another” Administrative Assistant
As part of the Miracle, we’re adding six new staff positions. In order for the administrative work of the church to continue, one of the new positions is an additional administrative assistant. So, we’ll actually have two administrative assistants soon.

THE SHINING LIGHT TEAM

Broadway’s Miracle on 29th Street’s first miracle was the hiring of the Facility Manager. They created a plan to oversee the day-to-day and long-range building needs and to supervise Broadway’s custodial staff. Coming together as Broadway’s Shining Light Team, have worked to keep the building safe and clean, while at the same time looking critically at our church’s physical body to identify and start working on improvements that will save money, make a more beautiful facility, and support the various ministries that call Broadway “home.”

You can click here for a narrative description of the improvements that the Shining Light Team team have made already. Or you can just stop by the church and look around!
