Broadway is a United Methodist congregation but there are some aspects that make us unique.
We are a joyous community: We believe life is to be joyous, even in the midst of the sorrow and pain. In our life together, we celebrate one another’s milestones, successes, and ministries as well as honoring the ministries that have come to an end. In worship, we lift up our concerns to God as well as “pass the peace’ to the entire congregation!
We see abundance. We believe everybody is a child of God with gifts to offer the world. But society often overlooks these gifts, seeing only labels and categories, needs, and stereotypes. Our church is located in a low-income community and our congregation comes from a variety of experiences and backgrounds, but we strive to focus on the many, diverse gifts of our neighbors and members, not their deficiencies.
We “have conversations and have faith.” We believe that the Spirit of God is alive in all people—persons of all age, race, ethnicity, gender or sexual identity. We seek to acknowledge and honor this spirit in all people by having conversations and listening for opportunities to connect and invest in the passions, interests, and gifts they have to share with the world.
We believe in extravagant grace: We believe that God loves us all, and nothing we do--or don't do--can change that. God’s grace has been revealed to us in Jesus, who came to give abundant life, to restore sight to the blind, to heal the sick and brokenhearted, to proclaim good news to the poor, and to release the oppressed.
We take the Bible seriously but not literally. We believe the stories of Jesus inform our Christian life. However, we are not afraid to question and grapple with the stories of our faith as we walk together on our spiritual journeys.
We are a place to call home! We consider ourselves an open family, eager to welcome friends, new and old, to our ever-expanding table. We love to get together over a meal just to talk, and we gather in times of joy, times of trouble, times of excitement and times of anxiety. We are a supportive community, defined by our love for God, love for our neighbor, and love for each other.
