ATTEND THE 2022 INTERNATIONAL AIDS CONFERENCE – Hoosier International AIDS Scholarship Fund

In 2018, while attending the International AIDS Conference in Amsterdam, Professor Harold S. Brown had a powerful experience resulting in a vision to bring a group of Hoosiers to the next International AIDS Conference so they could gain knowledge and inspiration that would move our state closer to ending the HIV epidemic.  In 2020, Professor Brown’s vision was made a reality as 22 Hoosiers from across the state came together to attend the IAC-VIRTUAL conference (due to the global pandemic).  Several of these participants had life-changing experiences that have led them to be leaders in their communities in the fight to end HIV.

As we look to 2022, we know that together we can End the HIV Epidemic, but we also know that simply continuing to do what we have been doing is not enough.  The CDC has set goals of 75% reduction in HIV transmission by 2025 and 90% by 2030.  These are bold goals especially for our community.  Marion County is one of 48 counties identified as a hotspot for HIV.  For the past 10 years millions of dollars and much effort has failed to move the needle.  There were 195 new HIV infections in 2010 and 199 in 2020 in the Indianapolis TGA.  While some populations have seen reductions, in the Black community the campaign against HIV/AIDS did not receive the same attention to combat the incidence and prevalence of the disease, and continues to experience a disproportionate impact today.  In Marion County, 52.8% of new HIV diagnoses are African American (and another 10.1% are Latinx).  Ending the HIV Epidemic will require diverse, insightful, and innovative leaders willing to admit to past failings while simultaneously embracing promising new approaches to education, outreach, support, and care.

Through the work of the Hoosier International AIDS Scholarship Fund we seek to create a bridge between the HIV/AIDS community and the Black Church since it is the primary institution connecting the Black community in America.  Through this partnership we will prioritize HIV awareness, health education, stigma reduction for people living with HIV (PLHIV), and advocate for a cure for HIV.
